How to do a monthly breast self-examination Just as your period ends (or at the same time each month if you do not have periods), check for any change in the normal look or feel of your breasts. Report any changes to your doctor or nurse. Go for regular breast exams and ask about a mammogram. Check your breasts using these steps: Step 1: Lying down ¨ Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder ¨ Use the pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand to examine your right breast ¨ Press using light, medium and firm pressure in a circle without lifting your fingers off the skin ¨ Follow an up-and-down pattern ¨ Feel for changes in your breast, above and below your collarbone and in your armpit ¨ Feel for a hard lump, thickening or any change in your breast tissue ¨ Repeat on your left breast using your right hand These steps may be repeated while bathing or showering using soapy hands. Step 2: Standing in front of a mirror ¨ Look for changes from normal; inspect your breast in four steps: ¨ Hold arms at your side ¨ Hold arms over your head ¨ Press your hands on your hips and tighten your chest muscles ¨ Bend forward with your hands on your hips

Did You Know? In the U.S., one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women of all ages. The most proven and significant risk factors are being female and getting older.
An estimated 1,720 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American men this year, while about 460 men will die of the disease.
Only 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are due to heredity. The majority of women with breast cancer have no known significant family history or other known risk factors.
In the U.S. today, there are 2.3 million breast cancer survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the nation.
Recognizing the Warning Signs of Breast Cancer Early Breast cancer usually does not cause pain and there may not be any symptoms. But as the cancer grows, it can cause changes that women and men should not ignore.
Warning Signs ¨ Lump, hard knot or thickening in any part of the breast ¨ Change in the size or shape of the breast ¨ Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple ¨ Nipple discharge that starts suddenly ¨ Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening that does not go away ¨ Dimpling or puckering of the skin on your breast ¨ Pulling in of the nipple or other parts of the breast ¨ New pain in one spot that does not go away
